It’s no surprise that we’re pretty passionate about pillows at PillowCubes. We can tell you all about the assorted types and sizes, delve into the history of unique things placed under pillows, and thoroughly explain the details behind each type of fill. On top of that, we’re always elated to share our pillow-inspired decor tips and tricks, DIY pillow-based projects, and Pinterest-worthy ideas.
Despite a vast array of pillow topic and discussions, there’s one important matter we have yet to shine light on… that being the fine art behind creating The Best Pillow Fort of All Time. Whether you’re a stay-at-home parent, a grandparent, a babysitter, an aunt or uncle, or just hoping to bring some childhood-fun back into the mundanity of adult life, everyone can stand to learn the keys to creating that perfectly stable, always comfortable pillow fort!

Step 1: Go, Locate, Gather
First, go and gather all of the pillows you can find in your home. We’re talking bolsters, cushions, throw pillows, round pillows, square pillows, tall pillows, short pillows … you get the picture. Simply go, locate, and gather. Next, round up a variety of sheets, blankets, and comforters. Finally, grab a few rubber bands, some heavy books, and a handful of clothes pins.
Step 2: Decision Making Time
First, you’ll need to decide on your pillow fort location. Choosing a room with furniture is going to set you up for success. Additionally, a room or area with less “house traffic” will ensure a longer lasting fort — just imagine all of all the outside intruders who may try to infringe on your epic pillow fort if it’s created in a high traffic area of the home. You know the spaces we’re referring to: mom’s most vacuumed area, the dog’s favorite wrestling spot, or the entryway to the home. Another tip, which is especially important during the hotter months, is to ensure close proximity to an AC vent or wall outlet for a fan!
Next, decide which furniture pieces will serve as your support system. Couches, chairs of varying levels, and tables can all serve as sturdy support systems. Plan to build your fort around these
Finally, decide where you’d like the opening (for example, if you want to be able to view your TV as you lay in your fort, ensure your opening will allow full view of your screen).
Step 3: The Sorting Process
This is where you’ll begin putting your analytical thinking skills to good use. Sort your pillows and blankets into three categories: wall worthy, floor worthy, and roof worthy. For walls, you’ll want to stick to more sturdy pillows and thicker blankets, like cushions or bolsters and comforters and heavy quilts. For the flooring, you’ll need your softer, fluffier pillows and blankets. For the roof, you’ll want to stick to your sheets and lighter materials to prevent caving in.
Step 4: Fort Construction Time
Finally, it’s time to kick off the building process! Begin by arranging all of your furniture in a circle or oval to create walls. Be sure to leave space in the middle and an opening! Next, prep the interior of the fort by spreading an assortment of blankets and pillows on the floor… the fluffier and more cozy, the better! Now, fill in any spaces and gaps on the outside of your walls using cushions and smaller pillows (this is the perfect place to use throw pillows!). Then, drape blankets along the sides of your walls to insulate your fort well.
Step 5: Raise the Roof
The final step for The Best Pillow Fort of All Time is to add the roof. Drape sheets across the furniture walls and use the heavy books you gathered earlier to weigh down the edges of the sheets. If the sheets are lightweight, you can layer them to create a darker interior. It’s also helpful to use rubber bands and clothes pins to secure the sheets to the top edge of any chairs or furniture you use as your walls.
Step 6: The Final Touches
Add any leftover pillows or cushions to the inside, a string of Christmas lights, a fan (especially in the summer time), and a smaller sheet across the entry way to create a door to make the interior of your epic fort a cozy fortress.
