Goldilocks and the Search for Perfect Pillows

Posted by Heather Galloway on Oct 15th 2016

You know the story...Goldilocks went through the house of the three bears, searching for things that were “just right” (or perfect for her). This story relates pretty well to pillows too. While we offer pillows in a wide variety of sizes, some pillows are too small or too big to be considered perfect pillows for our company.

Too Small?

While you might think that a smaller pillow will be a cheaper pillow, that’s not the case. When we make a pillow under twelve inches square (or a bolster pillow with less than a six inch diameter), it takes special procedures. Instead of using machinery to cut the fabric, stitch the fabric, and stuff the pillow, everything must be done by hand. This makes these pillows cost the same as a pillow nearly double their size. We do offer pillow forms as small as 5” x 5” (and bolsters as small as 5” x 18”), but our small perfect pillow starts at a size of 12” x 12” (or 6” x 12” bolster).

Too Big?

On the other end of the spectrum, a big pillow can be unwieldy and expensive. When we make a pillow over 30 inches square, we once again have to hand-cut the fabric, hand-stitch the fabric, and stuff the pillow by hand. This method makes the pillows more expensive to manufacture, but they’re also more expensive to ship. These large pillows cannot go through our vacuum sealing process, so they take much bigger boxes and higher shipping rates. We do offer pillow inserts in very large sizes, but our large perfect pillow is one measuring 30” x 30” or less.

Another issue to consider on these pillow extremes is quality. We pay attention to the details on every pillow we make. However, it’s difficult to maintain consistent quality in these situations where everything is done by hand. Stitching will not look exactly the same as the pillows made with machine assistance. It’s difficult to get enough filling into a tiny pillow, and it’s hard to avoid any fiber clumps in the stuffing of huge pillows.

If you need something tiny, such as a doll pillow or small animal bedding, we encourage you to create your own pillow. If you need something huge, such as a floor pillow or dog bed, we encourage you to put several pillows together. While we try to make any pillow that’s requested, please understand if we decline your order for something extra small or extra large. We don’t want to send you anything less than a perfect pillow!
