Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep: Hot vs. Cold Sleepers - The Best Pillow For You
Nothing ruins a night of rest more than a too-hot or too-cold sleeping situation. Sultry summer days can lead to sticky, sweaty nights and biting winter winds bring frigid bodily limbs — neither of which are appealing or conducive to getting the sleep you need! As one of the primary vectors for maintaining body temperature and the only part of yourself that remains outside of your sheets, your head can become especially hot or cold as you sleep making your pillow choice crucial.
PILLOWS FOR HOT SLEEPERS
Wake up often feeling sticky, sweaty, and damp? You’re what we’d call a “hot sleeper”, meaning your body temperature rises at night as you sleep. While this can be a nice trait to carry in the colder months, spring and summer can lead to quite a few restless nights. In addition to bumping down the AC (and paying to cool the entire home when you’re really only using a few rooms for sleeping) and using cotton sheets, investing in a proper pillow is also key for a cool night of sleep.
A down pillow can be comfortable, but it isn’t going to provide the cool factor you’re looking for and hot sleepers are going to be better off using a synthetic fill or poly-fill, both of which provide the ultimate breathability without sacrificing comfort. Hot sleepers should also be intentional when choosing a pillowcase for the pillow form. While pillowcases are created in many forms, breathable materials like 100% cotton or linen are the perfect choice to keep the perspired-filled nights at bay.
PILLOWS FOR COLD SLEEPERS
Always feel like you have chill and can’t seem to get warm enough during the day, let alone at night while trying to sleep? You, my friend, are a “cold sleeper” — your body temperature is low and stays that way no matter how many down comforters and mattress heaters you have on hand. While sleeping in a cool environment is an important aspect to a good night's sleep, being too cold can keep you tossing and turning all night long, which is why choosing pillows that lock in your heat is important.
If allergies are not a problem for you, we recommend investing in a down pillow as they trap warmth and keep you cozy and comfortable all night long. Keep in mind that the higher the down count is, the warmer you’ll be. Where cotton and linen pillow cases are a better option for the hot sleepers, cold sleepers should opt for a flannel, a fleece, or a satin pillowcase for added warmth. Allergies got you down? A synthetic down
Whether your sleeping style is always too hot, too cold, or, you’re one of the few lucky ones who has it “just right”, choosing your pillow type well is a significant decision for getting that good night of rest your body needs and craves. For more tips on sleep check out THIS post or THIS post.
