Ultimate May Bucket List

May 2nd 2018

The month of May has arrived and as American writer Edwin Way Teale eloquently put it, “The world's favorite season is the spring. All things seem possible in May.” It’s true, there’s something interesting about the way May seems to usher in a world of possibility and inspiration: room redecorations, pillow switch ups, spring cleaning, string lights outside, and dancing fireflies in the dusk. Something about the month of May just feels special and with that, we’re outlining the Ultimate May Bucket List!

1) Celebrate Cinco de Mayo
Spanish for “the fifth of May," Cinco de Mayo marks the Mexican Army’s defeat over the french empire with the Battle of Pueblo. While the holiday has been widely celebrated for years, it has more recently transformed into a day to celebrate Mexican-American culture which means more local celebrations and parties! Your town will most likely have a handful of events to celebrate the holiday, but it’s also a great time to test out your bartending and culinary skills with some delicious Mexican-Inspired fare. We love the recipes outlined HERE by the Food Network and cannot wait to try some of them on our own!

2) National Clean Your Room Day
An entire national day set apart for room cleaning? Interesting, but we’ll take it as it seems like the perfect reason to finish our spring cleaning! We love this article by HGTV outlining some key tips for the best spring cleaning and THIS article outlining 21 tips to cleaning your home

3) Make Homemade Ice-Cream
Spring just seems to scream “ice-cream” and making your own not only gives you creative freedom to create all sorts of fun flavors, it’s also a fun and different activity! Whether you own an ice-cream maker or not, you can still make the best homemade ice-cream around! We like this recipe for those without makers at home and THIS one for those with makers at home. Don’t be shy when it comes to exploring flavors! We’re talking mascarpone and blackberry, cilantro and lime, and honey-lavender. Get creative with it!

4) Celebrate Memorial Day
As a made-in-the USA pillow company, Memorial Day is especially important to us. Not only does it set aside time for us to remember and honor those who have fought for our freedom, but it also seems to make the beginning of true summertime. While the day often marks a day off from work and BBQs, it’s also a special time to remember and honor our heroes. Check out these great ideas for giving back to the community on the holiday.

5) Spend a Day by Water
Whether it’s a day at your neighborhood pool, an afternoon spent fishing at a local pond, a boat float on the lake, or a day trip to the beach, May is the perfect month to carve out time by the water. Not only does a little Vitamin D action help all of us, but there’s something calming about a day spent by the lapping of waves and fresh salty air! Be intentional about carving out time to spend a few hours by some water… just don’t forget the sunscreen!

6) Wash You Pillows Back to White
We recently shared our top tips for returning your dingy pillows back to white, and May seems like the perfect month to deep clean all the pillows in the home!

7) Celebrate Mother’s Day
May 13th is Mother’s Day, so be sure to mark your calendars accordingly! Try to think outside the box while celebrating Mom well this year. Rather than the same old bouquet of flowers, why not create an experience for her? Does she enjoy cooking? Send her to a local baking or sushi-making class. An art fanatic? Why not invest in a watercolor lesson session with a local artist? Does she love decorating and sewing? A PillowCubes gift certificate might just do the trick! Whatever you decide, try to do something that shows her you’ve thought just a little extra about what she’d truly enjoy!

8) Make Homemade Lemonade
Mmmm… there’s nothing quite like an ice cold lemonade on a warm spring evening. Why not invite some friends over to enjoy your nicely decorated porch and some fresh, homemade lemonade? We really like Betty Crocker’s version found HERE.

9) Create DIY Pillow Covers
Use felt cut into various shapes to make your very own pillow covers! Not only is it an easy-to-do craft for all ages and abilities, but it’s an inexpensive way to add some fun spring color to any room in your home!
